Extract text

Get the words out of a PDF without retyping them. Karatasi reads the text layer of your PDF and saves it as a plain .txt file you can open, search or paste anywhere.

How to use Extract text

  1. Choose the PDF you want to extract text from.
  2. Choose whether to mark where each page starts.
  3. Select Extract text.
  4. Download the .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work on scanned PDFs?

No — this reads the text layer that’s already embedded in the PDF. A scanned page is just an image, so there’s no text to pull out unless the PDF has already been through OCR.

Will the layout, like tables and columns, be preserved?

No. The text comes out in the order it’s stored in the PDF, which can jumble multi-column layouts and tables. It’s best for pulling out body text, not preserving formatting.

Can I extract text from just some pages?

Not directly — use Extract pages first to pull out the pages you want, then run Extract text on that smaller PDF.

What do the page markers look like?

When enabled, each page’s text is preceded by a line like “--- Page 3 ---” so you can tell where one page ends and the next begins.
